Nontraditional Students

Nontraditional students include adult learners in need of basic literacy and workplace skills. These students come to an educational setting with different developmental needs and expectations than more traditional students. Older students are often more motivated and achievement-oriented. They are keenly aware of financial and family obligations and respond best to learning activities that integrate or relate to their life and work experiences. 8

Technology supports these learners by removing barriers that might otherwise prevent them from attending classes or training. Web-based distance learning opportunities have quickly become a venue for nontraditional students to obtain or continue educational pursuits. Students utilizing distance learning may be able to avoid the need for child care or they may be able to attend classes without sacrificing work time. Nontraditional students also express concern about difficulties fitting in to the school culture. Web-based opportunities reduce these concerns.

The National Center for Adult Literacy, in partnership with the PBS Adult Learning Services, Kentucky Educational Television, and the Kentucky Department of Education, has used technology to provide adult learners with access to programs that meet their needs. PBS LiteracyLink® is an online literacy instruction program featuring Internet-based supports, video technologies (including digital, closed circuit, broadcast and satellite applications), and computer technologies. LiteracyLink® programs are designed to deliver instruction in workplace basic skills and GED preparation, and support the students' applications of these skills.
