New Ways to Volunteer

Parent support groups are going digital, just like the students they represent. The tools available to these groups help parents and community members who were once excluded from school participation due to time conflicts find ways to become more involved or involved for the first time.

Electronic communications that enable support groups to hold discussions and "meet" online—in real time or not—are a boon to parents who cannot visit the school or meet during the day. Parents can coordinate functions and meetings or help advertise events by e-mail, listservs, and Web pages. Some parents or businesses may be able to support the curriculum more directly by providing the opportunity for "virtual field trips" through Web-based interactions. Others can use a variety of Web-based tools to serve as "telementors."

Pack Your Bags. . .Or Not!

What is a virtual field trip? The Field Trips Site hosts several virtual field trips that are ready to be used in classrooms. The field trips focus primarily on nature topics across a wide range of grade levels and include teacher resources. Parents or businesses wishing to create similar virtual field trips can view the Field Trips Site for a guide or get creative on their own. School partners may consider posting virtual field trips matched to curricular goals on their district Web sites.
