The
extent to which parents and community members influence decision
making at the school or district level depends upon the school
structure. External involvement in decisions can include providing
information or actually shaping school or district policy.
Parent organizations, such as PTAs/PTOs and booster groups, often
play an informative role. While these groups usually work to raise
funds and rally support for school programs, they also serve as
a valuable source of input and feedback to school leaders. Some
schools take this role one step further and implement parent advisory
councils that focus on providing feedback to school leaders.
In some schools that utilize site-based management procedures,
parents and community members actually sit on policy-making boards.
The make-up of these groups will depend on the level of impact
of the organization. Parents serve as resources for most school-based
groups, while community members are more often found on advisory
boards at the district level.
