Activity: Why Use Technology?

Amidst the widespread emphasis on using technology in teaching and learning, have you ever wondered, "why use technology?" Besides the pressure from policymakers and parents, what evidence exists to support the use of technology in schools? If you have not already, now is the time to reflect on the reasons for using technology and how schools can harness technology to improve teaching and learning.

Kyle Peck and Denise Dorricott give a Top 10 List of reasons to use technology in an article for Educational Leadership. 1 For example, technology can foster an increase in the quantity and quality of students' thinking and writing, and it can create opportunities for students to do meaningful work. Students learn and develop at different rates, and technology can address some of these differences. Although it was written in 1994, the global nature of the items on the list keep it relevant for students today.

Read this short article and decide which is the most important reason for using technology in teaching and learning. Does this list include reasons you feel are most compelling to use technology? How have these reasons stood up over time? Would you make changes to the list? Post a message to the discussion area listing what you feel are the most appropriate reasons for using technology in teaching and learning. Include enough detail to explain your thinking. If appropriate, include a short story from your experience in your justification.
