Activity: Reviewing the Stages of Integration

Visit section three of the Principal Connections CD-ROM, "Foster the Environment." This section describes the ACOT™ Continuum in greater detail. Review the characteristics of each phase and look at the action steps to promote greater integration of technology. Note how teacher and student actions change through the stages, as well as how resources are used and activities are structured.

Getting There

  1. Insert and begin Principal Connections.
  2. From the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen, select the third icon, the apple icon. This will take you to the section titled "You're the Leader."
  3. Select the folded pamphlet on the middle of the desk.
Listen to "A Teacher Speaks" in each stage. Can you picture a colleague from your school or district who might have said something similar? Perhaps you've said some of these things yourself. Reflect on this section of the CD and assess your own integration characteristics. Even if you are no longer in the classroom regularly, place yourself on the integration continuum. Where do you fall within these five stages?

Post a message to the discussion area that indicates which of the five stages in each area you see yourself. Explain why you see yourself in this stage. Remember, no one started at the end of the continuum and finding yourself at the beginning stages simply means you will be able to identify with and help many of your colleagues. Remeber you may be in an early stage in one area and a higher stage in other areas. Discuss the reasons this has occured in each area.

If you are in the Entry or Adoption stages, list some barriers that may be preventing you from moving along the continuum. Perhaps you just need more time and experience. Many colleagues on your staff probably share the same feelings you have now. Being able to identify these feelings and experiences will help you in your own growth as well as in providing support for members of your staff.

If you are in one of the later stages of the continuum, describe some experiences that have helped promote this development. Were there any key moments—"a-ha" moments—that were significant in your development. How might you identify this for others? How could you provide an environment that supports the development of these skills and promotes growth along this continuum for your staff?
