Innovation Configurations

Innovation Configurations represent the patterns of use that can be observed when an innovation is implemented. Components of these configurations may include materials, teacher behaviors, or student actions that are dictated by the innovation. Critical components are those required for the stringent adoption of the innovation; however, these components may include less critical related elements or even variations of the way teachers can put a component into operation. The degree to which teachers use or demonstrate critical or related components or their variations will help the change facilitators determine support strategies and assess the impact of an innovation.

Change facilitators should develop an Innovation Configurations Component Checklist (IC Checklist) that identifies and describes critical and related components and their variations. This checklist is a useful tool for gauging the degree and success of implementation of any innovation. Most checklists should be honed to 5 to 7 components with variations.
