| Retrofitting. Whether wiring existing
buildings or remodeling classrooms to better accommodate networked
technology, building modification costs should be considered
in your budget. Older buildings may require asbestos or lead
removal. Additional considerations include flooring options,
changes in lighting and window treatments, and changes in
paint colors on the wall to accommodate projectors, videoconferencing,
or distance learning.
Furniture. Computer hardware requires desks
and chairs that have been ergonomically designed to meet
the unique physical demands of the equipment. Keyboards
may need lowered trays and precautions should be taken to
place monitors to avoid eye strain. Consideration should
also be given to storage. Some schools use laptop computers
on carts that require a secure closet or storage space when
not in use. Also, student bookbags and other belongings
may not fit under computer desks and may require additional
storage elsewhere in the room.
