| Age of the technology.
Aging computers may be designated as single-use machines,
but reliability becomes a problem. Older computers may not
be able to run necessary software or interfacing with the
network. Businesses often replace computers on a three-year
cycle but schools may be able to stretch this to five years.
Number of computers. Having more computers
increases the need for support, software licenses, peripherals,
and consumable supplies. Having fewer computers impacts
your student per computer ratio and may increase the time
necessary for integrating technology into the curriculum.
Number of platforms. Schools or districts
that limit computer purchases to a single platform may reduce
support and maintenance costs; however, curricular needs
may dictate the purchase of software that does not run on
a given platform.
