Factors That Influence Cost: Connectivity

Network. There are a wide variety of broadband delivery modes, including wireless options, but not all are available in every geographic area. Networks must be designed carefully to efficiently support the needs of teaching, learning, and management. Slow network transfer rates can actually prevent teachers and students from accomplishing curricular goals and can reduce any return on the investment. Talk with other schools, districts, and several telecommunications providers to find the most effective and cost-efficient network for your needs.

Alternate media. While most classrooms are being wired to connect to the Internet, many classrooms do not even have phone lines. Consider all your wiring needs at the same time. Cables for phone and broadcast television can be installed along with network cables.

Working with vendors. Vendors can be a useful resource for help with networking decisions—something few school leaders have experience with. However, vendors are also selling products and their products may not be the best solution for your needs. Working with these outside sources will be more productive if you keep in mind the following:

  • Have a plan that clearly defines educational outcomes, a realistic budget, and expectations regarding time lines.
  • Do your research. Know what services you need and understand some equipment options.
